In a grubby viewing theater, I sit with Mick,
Keith, Brian and Charlie watching a rough
cut of “The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll
Circus”. The movie opened with Jethro Tull
followed by The Who, Marianne Faithful, Taj
Mahal and Dirty Mac (a band specially formed
for ‘Circus’ featuring John Lennon, Yoko Ono
and Eric Clapton). Finally, The Stones perform
lackluster renditions of “Jumping Jack Flash,”
“Sympathy for the Devil,” “No Expectations,”
“Parachute Woman,” and “You Can’t Always
Get What You Want”. The lights go up, and a
tough looking guy (Allen Klein, their manager)
gets up and starts castigating The Stones’
performance stating they were so bad, they
will have to shoot their set over again. This
never happened. The project gathered dust
until 1996 when ABKCO released it.
